Art Club Mural

MST Art Club and our enrichment group "Adventures in Art" made a mixed media mural based on Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night." The kids had a great time working together to create their own "MST Starry Night" version.

Artist Trading Cards

5th and 6th Grade MST Artists made Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) and one of their very first assignments of the year. We discussed layering different materials, and trying new ways of handling every day materials to make mixed media collages.

The results were one of a kind! These cards were such a success, we traded them with another Elementary school in Ft. Worth. Each student received a different card from an unknown artist. You can read more about their experiences on our blog's "Artist Trading Card" page.

Howtoons: Seeing the Future

Our 5th grade artists are connecting laugauge with art through visual story telling.  We have studied the industries that involve visual communication such as comic novels, animation, design, movies. After reading the comic "Seeing the Future"  students began to illustrate their own comic stip to include a title frame and action frames.  Their story could be fictional, historical, or personal.

Aldea Weaving from aldea on Vimeo.

Through the unit Recycle, Reuse, and Renew: 3rd grade artists are learning to create functional items from reuseable household materials.  In their first lesson students created a handmade wallet from recycle magazine paper and duct tape.  We discussed the importance of measuring, folding, and craftsmanship.  The second lesson will teach the students to create a woven cloth from yarn, string, pipe cleaners, plastic baggies, sticks, lace, felt, etc.  By weving these patterns from a variety of materials, students will increase their dexterity and fine motor skils. What can you make from recycled materials?

Marie's Mandala from Marie Camille on Vimeo.
The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle," a mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself--a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.

Describing both material and non-material realities, the mandala appears in all aspects of life: the celestial circles we call earth, sun, and moon, as well as conceptual circles of friends, family, and community. -http://www.mandalaproject.org/What/Index.html

6th grade artists are beginning to work on their own sacred circles to describe their personal beliefs, traits, and characteristics.
